One of the Camerata’s most beloved productions, this rich program features rare Christmas music from the church and the countryside of Renaissance Europe – works by Dufay, Josquin, Byrd, Praetorius and many other composers of France, Spain, Italy, England and Germany. Some of these works were originally conceived for church services and use a more elaborate form of musical writing. Others, with vernacular texts, are more direct, in keeping with the spirit of a “people’s’ Christmas. The most astonishing contrasts of seriousness and playfulness run throughout this repertoire, as though to remind us that Revelation, while of great import, is not always solemn.

Twenty-one years ago, Camerata's now-legendary treatment of the immortal Tristan and Iseult legend, based on original medieval sources, won the Grand Prix du Disque and toured three continents. We now present it anew for lovers of all ages. You will hear central elements of the world's most famous romance almost exactly as they were narrated in the Middle Ages in Germany and France, with magnificent music drawn from manuscript sources of the same period, performed by a stellar cast of singers and instrumentalists. A memorable experience, not to be missed!
