“Because we are doing the music that we’re doing, we look backwards. The plague brought out the worst and best in people. So how best can we help now? What form will [our music take]?”

~ Anne Azéma

This article by Keith Powers features the thoughts of several leaders of Boston early music ensembles, including our own Artistic Director Anne Azéma as well as Kathleen Fay of the Boston Early Music Festival and Martin Pearlman of Boston Baroque, plus other perspectives from around the US.

We are well aware, as are you, of all the problems and uncertainties that come with this grave health crisis. Our first, overriding concern, for you and for all of us, is our continued safety and good health. Yet despite all obstacles — those we all meet as fellow humans, and those which are specific to the performing arts — we at Camerata are determined to keep the redeeming grace of music alive and present in today’s world. Please see our hopeful vision under Upcoming Performances.

TODAY, Sunday, April 19, Camerata’s Free America! program will be broadcast on WCRB In Concert at 7pm EST.

The program was recorded live last November at Faneuil Hall in Boston, the location of many revolutionary town meetings during the 1760s and 1770s.

You can tune in on your radio (99.5 in the Boston area) or online at www.classicalwcrb.org. The full program & notes will be available on the WCRB website after the broadcast, and can be downloaded here.

An offering from Camerata, during this important week for both Jews and Christians. The psalm recounts the exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt, and we sing it, alternating verses, in both the (original) Hebrew and Latin versions. One tune comes from Jewish oral tradition; the other is the Gregorian “tonus peregrinus.”

But wait, aren’t they different versions of the same thing? And aren’t we all, on this mortal coil, brothers and sisters?

Sadly, we regret to inform you that all performances by The Boston Camerata for the remainder of the 2019-2020 season will not take place as planned because of continuing concerns around the coronavirus/COVID-19, as well as essential restrictions on public activities. We certainly appreciate your understanding of this decision and look forward to seeing you at our future concerts and events in 2020-2021.

Meanwhile, please stay healthy and may our lives continue to be full of music!

Our esteemed Victoria Bocchicchio, stalwart General Manager for most of the previous 12 months, has departed because of family reasons. She will be much missed, but she remains close to us as a volunteer and general guiding spirit.

Meanwhile, we welcome Caitlin Laird (top right in the picture) to this vital post. Caitlin, a musician and scholar as well as an admirable administrator, has hit the ground running, with plenty of good new ideas and upbeat energy.

Continuing on the team are Peter Smith, business manager extraordinaire, Joel Cohen, emeritus purveyor of Facebook posts, and Anne Azéma, who continues to look benevolently at office business when her nose is not buried in musical scores. Camerata’s musical spirit flows on!

As contemporary history unfolds hour by hour, Camerata’s music once again brings the ancient stories of conflict in Iraq and Iran to the forefront of our consciousness.

This stunning, contemporary new production by Anne Azéma of the greatest musical play from the French Middle Ages involves lights, movement, urgent poetry, and a sterling cast including seasoned professionals, children, and students, to make 1310 happen again, in 2020. A national tour in January and February will bring this magnificent production to audiences on the West and East coasts.

Please read further for dates and times; you will not want to miss this event.

“Overwhelming Joy…The Camerata changes lives”

The kids were touched by beauty and that is a miracle. . . You are changing lives!
– Oscar Olmos, Director, Everett Hispanic Children’s Choir

The whole program (La Estrella) was delightful but the joined voices of the children, the Caribbean singers, and the Camerata mainstays filled me with overwhelming joy.
– Rick Heym, Longtime Camerata patron

Has Camerata’s music brought joy to you as well, this year? Have you taken pleasure in our live concerts, our recordings and radio broadcasts, our Facebook or Instagram posts, our music online?
